Public assets, visible and accountable

Municipalities and utilities look after assets spread across streets, sites and networks. LIOMO connects them to software that shows their condition and use, so maintenance and services can be planned on evidence.

Context

Assets spread across a whole territory

Public infrastructure is defined by scale and spread. A municipality or utility may be responsible for car parks, transport depots, pumping stations, street lighting, bins and vehicle fleets across a whole city or region. Many of these assets are inspected on rounds and repaired when someone reports a problem.

Public bodies also work under particular constraints: long asset lives, procurement rules, tight budgets and accountability to residents. Systems need to use open standards where possible, run on equipment that lasts outdoors for years, and produce records that can be explained to councils and the public. Connected infrastructure is most useful when it fits those constraints rather than adding another closed system.

Challenges

What makes it hard

  • 01

    Assets checked by rounds

Inspections on fixed schedules miss problems in between and visit assets that do not need attention.

  • 02

    Little data on use

Decisions about parking, depots and services are often made without a reliable record of how they are used.

  • 03

    Fleets across departments

Waste, maintenance and service vehicles are run by different departments, with little shared view of location, use or cost.

  • 04

    Long-lived, mixed equipment

New systems have to work alongside equipment installed over decades and supplied by many different makers.

Applications

How LIOMO applies

Public infrastructure projects are designed around open standards and the assets already in place. Municipal vehicles can run on LIOMO Fleet, our own platform; the other areas are delivered as projects.
  • Smart Parking

    Public car parks and kerbside

A LIOMO project can include bay sensors or entrance counting, occupancy information for signage and apps, and records of use that support decisions on capacity and pricing.

  • IoT Solutions

    Street-level and network assets

Bins, pumping stations, water levels, lighting cabinets and other street assets can report their condition over low-power networks such as LoRaWAN or NB-IoT, so fixed rounds can become visits based on need.

  • Fleet Management

    Municipal and depot fleets

On LIOMO Fleet, waste, maintenance and service vehicles from different departments share one live map, with geofences around depots and service areas, driver scores and costs per vehicle.

  • EV Charging

    Depot and public charging

For transport depots and public car parks, a LIOMO project can cover charger selection and management over open protocols such as OCPP, with charging scheduled around vehicle duties and site capacity.

  • Energy Management Systems

    Energy across public sites

Metering public buildings, depots and pumping sites shows where energy goes and helps prioritise efficiency work.

Illustrative scenario

Illustrative scenario: a municipal services department

This is an illustrative example, not a client project. It shows how the four stages could apply to a town that runs public car parks, a vehicle depot and a waste collection service.

Illustrative example, not a client project

  1. 01

Connect: car parks, bins and vehicles

Occupancy sensing is added to the public car parks, fill-level sensors are fitted to a set of public bins, and GPS trackers are installed in the waste and maintenance vehicles.

  2. 02

    Collect: one record across services

Car-park occupancy, bin fill levels and vehicle positions are gathered into one central store over mobile and low-power networks.

  3. 03

Understand: use and condition over time

The department sees how each car park fills through the day, which bins fill fastest, and how vehicles are used across routes and depots.

  4. 04

    Act: services planned on evidence

Collection rounds are planned around the bins that need emptying, residents are pointed to car parks with space, and vehicle use and costs inform the next budget.

Outcomes to aim for

Outcomes to aim for

  • Maintenance based on need

Visits planned around the actual condition of assets rather than a fixed calendar.

  • Decisions backed by records

Usage and condition data that can be shown to councils and residents.

  • Better use of public space

Parking information that helps drivers find space and helps planners size capacity.

  • One view of public fleets

Vehicles from several departments visible, measured and costed in one place.
