Conceptual demonstration
Live occupancy for a public car park
How bay sensors, entry counting and guidance displays could show drivers and operators where space is available, and give planners reliable occupancy data.
Conceptual demonstration
This is a conceptual demonstration: a worked example of how LIOMO would approach this kind of system. It is not a client project, and it describes no real customer, site or result.
Challenge
The scenario
Consider a multi-level public car park near a town centre. Drivers circle looking for space, queues form at the entrance at peak times, and the operator has only rough estimates of how the car park is used across the week.
Approach
How LIOMO would approach it
01
Connect
Fit bay sensors on each level and counters at entries and exits, connected through a low-power network and an on-site gateway.
02
Collect
Gather bay states and counts continuously, and flag sensors that stop reporting.
03
Understand
Show live occupancy per level and build a history of use by hour and day.
04
Act
Drive guidance displays at the entrance and on each level, and share availability with other systems through an API.
Architecture
System components
- 01
Bay sensors
One per bay, reporting occupied or free.
- 02
Entry and exit counters
A cross-check for bay data and a fallback for open areas.
- 03
Gateway and network
Low-power wireless network with an on-site gateway.
- 04
Occupancy platform
Live dashboard, history, sensor health and an availability API.
- 05
Guidance displays
Free-space counts at the entrance and per level.
What it shows
What it illustrates
Less searching
Drivers are guided to free space instead of circling.
Planning with facts
Occupancy history replaces estimates in pricing and capacity decisions.
Open data
Availability can be shared with other services through an API.
