Conceptual demonstration

Overnight EV charging at a van depot

How a depot could charge an electric van fleet overnight within its grid connection, using load management and charging schedules linked to vehicle data.

Conceptual demonstration

This is a conceptual demonstration: a worked example of how LIOMO would approach this kind of system. It is not a client project, and it describes no real customer, site or result.

Illustrative interface · demo data. An EV charging site overview with six chargers: three charging at different power levels, one finishing, one available and one unavailable. A load bar shows site capacity shared between the building and charging, with headroom kept below the connection limit.

Challenge

The scenario

Imagine a company replacing part of its diesel vans with electric ones. All vans return to one depot in the evening and must be ready in the morning, but the depot grid connection was sized for a warehouse, not for charging many vehicles at once.

Approach

How LIOMO would approach it

  • 01

    Connect

Assess the grid connection and existing loads, then select chargers that support open protocols such as OCPP and fit a meter at the connection point.

  • 02

    Collect

Bring charger sessions, meter readings and vehicle return times into one platform.

  • 03

    Understand

Compare the energy each van needs with the time and capacity available overnight.

  • 04

    Act

Share available capacity dynamically between chargers so the connection limit is respected and every van is charged by departure.

Architecture

System components

A layered design that keeps the chargers replaceable and the data in your hands.
  1. 01

    Chargers

AC chargers for overnight charging, managed over an open protocol.

  2. 02

    Site meter

Measures total site load so charging can use only the remaining capacity.

  3. 03

    Charge management

Load balancing and schedules based on departure times.

  4. 04

    Fleet data

Return times and distances from fleet tracking inform charging priority.
